This one was one of Joe’s wonderful Christmas gifts to us last year (2008), combining two of the most loved “ballad”-type Christmas carols into a cohesive medley.
I’m not sure why, but in his original, he used the second verse of “We Three Kings” (about the gift of gold). Since this follows immediately with the third verse of “What Child Is This?” which begins, “So | bring Him in-cense, | gold, and myrrh, come …”, I figured that it sounds a bit awkward to mention all three gifts after a verse that focuses on just one of them. So, in this version, I replaced the lyrics with those of the first verse for the “We Three Kings” section (which is more familiar to most audiences anyway — this carol is rarely sung all the way through, at least not where I live).
You can, of course, sing whatever lyrics you want. If you want to be true to Joe’s original vision, simply sing the second verse’s lyrics instead.
